Nature Oriented Dwelling

Hello! This page is a work in progress. Feel free to browse, but if you’re looking for more current information about NŌDs and Nature Oriented Dwelling — head over to our main site.

The science is clear. We must leave fossil fuels in the ground and we have to actively sequester carbon to stop the worst effects of climate change. Plants pull carbon from the atmosphere and after harvesting for use (food, fiber, medicine, timber) a lot of the carbon is in the remnants. This bi-product is typically burned or composted, releasing the carbon back into the atmosphere forming C02 - a leading cause of climate change. Using that raw material to make shelter has a rich legacy throughout history and this practice which locks up carbon for generations will be our future. The developed world’s dependence on fossil fuels to build our homes is just a blip in time and is quickly expiring. Forward thinking builders around the globe are transitioning to plant-based, carbon sequestering construction and homeowners are falling in love with the healthy, affordable, earth-friendly alternative.

NŌD is a carbon sequestration company. We founded this mission-based, low-profit, social benefit company to innovate, collaborate, learn, educate and revel in the transformation underway in our built environment using rapidly renewable plants to store carbon and stave off climate change. We’re here to help usher in the cleaner, healthier and more equitable future that these practices will deliver. And we’d like for you to join us.

Our grandchildren will thank us.

Build the change you want to see in the world.

The best way to support this work is to build a nature oriented dwelling (NŌD) in your backyard. A NŌD is a plant-based, carbon sequestering structure of any size or function. Early adopters help others feel confident in growing the movement which can have a snowball effect. Over the last year, we’ve built an office, a bathhouse, a pottery & wine making studio, a yoga hut and a surf shack on the Oregon Coast. We’re in development on a sauna, a painting studio, an ecotherapy sanctuary, a detached bedroom and two ADUs slated for 2022. If you already in the planning stages, you could still order your building a la NŌD! We’ll consult with you and/or your designer to maximize the use of carbon storing plant based material in your building.

Hire us for your other building needs.

Placecraft Design and Build, LLC is our parent company. 100% of Placecrafts profits over the last two years and then some have been invested in our NŌD venture. The income we generate at Placecraft will continue to offset our R & D expenses for the foreseeable future. Placecraft is a full-service design and build company. We primarily focus on carpentry-oriented projects : decks, fences, custom cabinets, built-ins and finish carpentry. We are licensed general contractors and will consider additions, renovations, remodels and energy retrofits.

Come to a BlocParty!

StraClaBlocs™ are our main carbon-storing building component. They are a building insulation product made by mixing clean straw with liquid pottery clay. We stomp and press the straw-clay concoction into forms before racking them to cure in our solar kiln. The result is a stable, natural insulation block that can be installed into a building frame when dry. • Follow us:

  • Recommend applicable social and environmental grants. This is essential for continued growth and impact. If this is your wheelhouse, please contact us!

  • Advise and offer consultation particularly with engineering, thermal calculations & code appeals.

  • Invest! We are being counseled on how best to handle investments. If you’re interested, please email us.

Our work reflects an awareness that our society is in a time of transition. We’re all feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed with the big changes on the horizon. We must enact bold new ideas in order to reverse course on our societal and environmental degradation. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re doing our best to question everything that isn’t working and striving to do it better. We are observing, innovating and adapting. We envision a more beautiful world will come out of this time of uncertainty and are welcoming you to reimagine with us.
